How it works

The essence of Books in Places is taking the book club meeting experience to the heart of the book, the city where it is set. You’ll stay in a hotel in the city the book is set in, visit the sites described in the book and then discuss the book with your fellow travellers over a meal in an authentic restaurant linked to the book. Books in Places is built around solo travellers and the pleasure of making new like-minded friends in a relaxed and sociable environment.

So entirely strange to be back after such an amazing adventure! Florence said goodbye to us with thunder, lightning and buckets of real wet rain.....delayed our flight as she wept for our departure!! To think we didn't know each other at all 5 days ago....total strangers (most of us) is remarkable and fascinating to me. What is that power that brought us together to share those lovely days? Is it the book? Paul? Some magic invisible thread that we didn't know existed that pulled us close together? Simply beautiful (and I was in search of beauty......). Books transport us to another world. The sights and sounds come alive to us, so you almost feel you are there, surrounded by the architecture, the people and the scenery. We go to book clubs to talk about and dissect the books we love. Now imagine a book club meeting held right there, in a restaurant, in the city, discussing the book with others just like you, who love the book and want to experience it in a whole new way.

Paul has created a unique book group by recognising that book lovers have interests that extend beyond the covers of the group’s chosen novel. As well as guiding discussion of the book itself, he makes space for likeminded people to simply chat - about books, but also about other stuff. That makes Paul’s book gang an enriching experience .

Paul runs an amazing book club. Often 50 people sign up and there is always a waiting list of people. The books are varied, interesting and invoke discussion and friendships. He leads with intelligence, inclusion and warmth. An eclectic, wonderful, varied group of people attend. Am so excited by the idea of taking the books to the location. This will be fabulous and I will look forward to enjoying the holiday and the read.
